Meet the Otago Peninsula's Penguins & Wildlife
Portobello Village Tourist Park is perfectly located for exploring the Otago Peninsula's incredible wildlife. Within just 15–20 minutes, you can visit The OPERA, Clearwater Wildlife Tours, and Blue Penguins Pukekura.
The Otago Peninsula is one of the best places in New Zealand to see the endangered Hoiho (yellow-eyed penguin) and the Kororā (little blue penguin) in their natural habitat. Guided tours offer the best opportunity to experience these remarkable birds while supporting vital conservation efforts.
Wildlife tours are extremely popular, particularly during summer and school holidays, so we recommend booking ahead to avoid missing out.
Royal Albatross Tours Near Dunedin – A Must-See Otago Peninsula Wildlife Experience
Only 20 minutes from Portobello Village Tourist Park, the Royal Albatross Centre offers a rare opportunity to see the world's only mainland breeding colony of Northern Royal Albatross. Watch these magnificent seabirds soar overhead with wingspans of up to three metres, learn about their fascinating breeding cycle, and enjoy spectacular coastal views from the exclusive observatory.
This is one of Dunedin's most iconic wildlife experiences, so we highly recommend booking your tour in advance, especially during peak holiday periods.

Located just a short walk from Portobello Village Tourist Park, Augustines of Portobello Farmstore & Kitchen is a must-visit destination on the Otago Peninsula for locally inspired food, great coffee, and a relaxed farm-to-table experience.

Walk to Harbour Cone – A Scenic Otago Peninsula Adventure
Just a short walk from Portobello Village Tourist Park, the iconic Harbour Cone offers one of the Otago Peninsula's most rewarding walking experiences. This historic volcanic peak is a favourite local walk, with spectacular views across the harbour, coastline, surrounding farmland, and Peninsula landscape.
The full walk to the summit takes approximately 3 hours return and is well worth the effort for the incredible 360-degree views from the top. The track takes you through beautiful countryside and provides a wonderful opportunity to experience the natural beauty of the Otago Peninsula right from your doorstep.
We recommend wearing proper footwear, as the track can be uneven and muddy after wet weather. Don’t forget your camera as this is one of the best viewpoints near Portobello.

Hoopers Inlet – A Peaceful Otago Peninsula Walk
Located just a short drive from Portobello Village Tourist Park, Hoopers Inlet is a beautiful and tranquil spot to explore the natural beauty of the Otago Peninsula. Surrounded by rolling farmland, coastal landscapes, and native wildlife, it is a wonderful place for a scenic walk, bird watching, and enjoying the peaceful surroundings.
The Hoopers Inlet loop walk takes you through a mix of farmland and coastal scenery, with opportunities to spot native birds and enjoy stunning views across the inlet. Keep an eye out for local wildlife, including spoonbills, herons, and other wetland birds.

We recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes and bringing your camera — Hoopers Inlet is one of the Peninsula’s hidden gems.
Larnach Castle – A Historic Otago Peninsula Must-Visit
Just 15 minutes from Portobello Village Tourist Park, Larnach Castle is one of Dunedin’s most iconic attractions and a highlight of any Otago Peninsula visit.

Otago Peninsula Cycleway & Port to Port Ferry – Explore Without the Car
Got your bikes with you? Or keen to hire some and explore the Otago Peninsula on two wheels? Portobello Village Tourist Park is a great base for cycling adventures, with scenic routes, coastal views, and local attractions all within easy reach.
The Otago Peninsula Cycleway offers a beautiful way to explore the area, taking you along quiet roads, waterfront paths, and through stunning Peninsula landscapes. It’s a relaxed and rewarding way to discover beaches, villages, wildlife spots, and hidden gems at your own pace.
Want to explore the other side of the harbour? The Port to Port Ferry is a fantastic option for cyclists and visitors without a car. The ferry connects the Otago Peninsula with Port Chalmers, allowing you to enjoy more of the harbour’s scenery and attractions while avoiding the longer road route.
The Port to Port Ferry stop is approximately 5 minutes from Portobello Village Tourist Park by bike (or a short drive), making it easy to start your harbour adventure.
Whether you bring your own bike or want to hire one locally, the Otago Peninsula is best explored slowly — with plenty of opportunities to stop, take in the views, and enjoy the journey.
Allans Beach – Meet New Zealand Sea Lions on the Otago Peninsula
Located approximately 15 minutes by car from Portobello Village Tourist Park, Allans Beach is one of the Otago Peninsula’s most special wildlife spots. This beautiful stretch of coastline is home to New Zealand sea lions, where you may see these impressive animals resting on the sand, playing in the waves, or exploring the dunes.
The drive to Allans Beach is part of the adventure, with stunning coastal views along the way. Please take your time and drive carefully, especially during the sea lion breeding season, as these curious animals sometimes wander beyond the beach and onto the road. You may even be lucky enough to encounter a sea lion while driving — always give them plenty of space, slow down, and never approach or disturb them.
Bring your camera, enjoy the wild beauty of the Otago Peninsula, and remember that these incredible animals are best appreciated from a safe distance.
Hereweka Track – A Scenic Otago Peninsula Hiking Adventure
Located just 5 minutes walking distance from Portobello Village Tourist Park, the Hereweka Track is a rewarding walk showcasing some of the best scenery on the Otago Peninsula.
This stunning track takes you through native bush, regenerating forest, and open farmland, with breathtaking views across Hoopers Inlet, Harbour Cone, and the surrounding Peninsula landscape. It’s a favourite for walkers wanting to experience the area’s natural beauty away from the crowds.
The full loop takes approximately 3–4 hours and includes some steeper sections, so good fitness and proper walking footwear are recommended. Pack water, a jacket, and your camera — the views from the higher points are well worth the climb.
